The launch of American Girl’s 2018 Girl of the Year is always an exciting start to the new year! We’re even more excited to share Luciana Vega, American Girl’s 2018 Girl of the Year, because she’s STEM based and out-of-this world!

American Girl’s 2018 Girl of the Year

This year, American Girl is fully embracing STEM, and they’re on a mission to teach girls to reach for the stars. Luciana Vega is the first fully STEM based doll, and we’re so excited she’s joining the American Girl lineup to show girls that STEM is cool!

Meet Luciana Vega

Luciana Vega is a confident 11 year old who is an aspiring astronaut and wants to be the first person on Mars.

Luciana is a young girl of Chilean descent, with a serious science streak. While she dreams of going to space in the future, she learns that being a good leader and team player is important on Earth too! Follow Luciana’s story as she earns a scholarship to Space Camp in Alabama, and the challenges she faces. Luciana shines through with bravery, curiosity and self confidence!

“Luciana is a role model for today’s girls—empowering them to defy stereotypes, and embrace risks that will teach them about failure and success as they chart their own course in life—whatever the goal. For us, it’s all about building girls of strong character, and it’s why we’re continuing to encourage girls to lead change and embrace #charactercounts.” – Katy Dickson, president of American Girl.

We love her pink and purple space dress and sparkly metallic silver shoes too!

She is an 18 inch doll with warm brown skin, sparkling brown eyes and dark brown hair with a bright purple streak that shows off her creative and bold side!

There is a series of books to chronicle Luciana’s adventures, and of course lots of fun, science inspired accessories in her collection including a Mars habitat and NASA inspired space suit.

American Girl & NASA

American Girl and NASA have partnered together to make sure that her story is authentic with help from Dr. Ellen Stofan, former NASA Chief Scientist; Dr. Deborah Barnhart, CEO and Executive Director of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center; Dr. Megan McArthur Behnken, NASA Astronaut; and Maureen O’Brien, Manager of Strategic Alliances at NASA.

To take Luciana’s message even further, American Girl partnered with NASA, Scholastic, and Space Camp to launch Blast Off to Discovery. This educational program can help third through fifth-grade kids become engaged in STEM. Kids can explore the wonder of space through Luciana-inspired and STEM based content. Blast Off to Discovery will be available Janary 31, 2018 on American Girl and Scholastic will also host a Mission to Mars Sweepstakes offering families a series of weekly missions and chances to win several prizes, including a grand prize trip to Space Camp (a $2,000 value).

There will also be a Luciana-Themed Space Camp where girls and their families can train just like astronauts—including taking a tumble spin in the Multi-Axis Trainer and designing a robot—at a special Girl of the Year experience created in partnership with Space Camp starting in summer 2018. American Girl is also sponsoring 20 scholarships to attend Space Camp. To learn more, visit

To celebrate her launch, AG is hosting Luciana debut events at its retail locations nationwide on January 1. The event features interactive science demonstrations, a Moon Phase craft, galaxy-inspired treats, and a free Luciana doll tee to take home. For more details, visit

My 9 year old daughter Ariana shares a love of science and space with Luciana. Ariana has been telling us that she is going to be an astronaut since she was 4 years old so she’s excited to meet Luciana this year! Coincidentally, she also hopes to be the first person on Mars, more specifically the first woman.

Do you have a space or science loving kiddo who would love Luciana? Tell us who you would buy Luciana for!
