The goal of the Summer Reading Journal is to set attainable goal, make to make reaching them fun with varied activities and reading prompts and encourage summer reading for kids of all reading levels.

My kids are on opposite ends of the reading spectrum. My oldest is a total bookworm who reads voraciously. My younger reader is good at it, but doesn’t like it – at all. I’ve offered her every kind of book under the sun and she just doesn’t reach for books like I wish she would. I am optimistic that the Summer Reading Journal will motivate my reluctant reader to pick up her books this summer. She filled out her goals and is hoping to read 11 books this summer. My reader is shooting for 25.

As far as I’m concerned, if they are reading and writing and keeping busy I will call this Summer Reading Journal a total win!

Summer Reading Journal

The Journal is a 25-page PDF document filled with lists, book prompts and even summer reading Bingo. The Reading Journal starts with Summer Reading Goals and it is a great jumping off point for discussion about what your child hopes to accomplish this summer and how you can help. The majority of the Journal pages are book summaries with prompts – there are several different versions so they don’t get too repetitive – and there are also plain pages for random journaling. The Summer Reading Bingo is definitely my favorite page and my kids are already working towards their first Bingo!

To make your own Summer Reading Journal, download the PDF document, print and bind it however works for you. We put ours in small 3-ring binders because we don’t have a good resource on base for binding.
